A Few of My Favourite Things – A Happy New Year

Maria, in the Sound of Music, lists fourteen of her favourite things. It set me thinking what some of mine would be. First of all, I had a look through to see what made Maria happy, although I don’t share all of them.
Raindrops on Roses are pretty nice, but I would want the whole kitten, not just the whiskers! I do like copper utensils and warm gloves are a necessity in cold weather. My mittens would be of acrylic fabric, as I am unable to tolerate wool next to my skin. Warm acrylic mittens fail to conjure up the same image somehow.

Ponies would be on my list, but I am allergic to apples.  I’m not especially keen on doorbells, but they are useful.  I’ve noticed that some houses nearby don’t even have one, so that callers have to hammer on the door to get attention!
Sleigh bells would be nice and I eat a lot of things with noodles, but not schnitzel. There are no flying wild geese where I live, so Kites, Herons and Seagulls, will have to do.  Everyone will have their own individual lists of favourite things. Roses are on mine, together with sunsets and nature. Squirrels which are plentiful in this area, are definitely on it.

In terms of Mindfulness, Maria is self-soothing with happy thoughts.  Perhaps she even finds her Happy Place, where she feels completely safe and happy. I was at first puzzled when a friend told me that she was going to her ” Happy Place”, by which she meant a virtual place, where she can relax.  Of course, there may be actual places that illicit this feeling. A sunny afternoon contemplating daisies on the grass gives me such a feeling & is a mental image I can rely on when the sun isn’t shining.

Lyrics to the Sound of Music

Raindrops on roses and whiskers on kittens
Bright copper kettles and warm woollen mittens
Brown paper packages tied up with strings
These are a few of my favourite things

Cream-colored ponies and crisp apple strudels
Doorbells and sleigh bells and schnitzel with noodles
Wild geese that fly with the moon on their wings
These are a few of my favourite things

Girls in white dresses with blue satin sashes
Snowflakes that stay on my nose and eyelashes
Silver white winters that melt into springs
These are a few of my favourite things

When the dog bites, when the bee stings
When I’m feeling sad
I simply remember my favourite things
And then I don’t feel so bad +è
