The queen is a model of dignity, and she has always used her position to remember people affected by conflict or disaster. During his long reign, she lived through many turbulent times and maintained close ties with the military as Britain faced conflicts all over the world.
In honour of the Platinum Jubilee, IWM London will present a rich programme that will explore the role of the royal family in the context of the conflict through original and touching personal stories. This free exhibition is on display at the Imperial War Museum in Lambeth from May 27 to January 8, 2023.
The Queen’s first public duties as Princess Elizabeth were during World War II, which broke out when she was 13 years old.
She became the first woman in the royal family to enlist as a full-time member of the military after joining the auxiliary territorial service in 1945. As head of the military, Queen Elizabeth II has supported both the service and veterans since then.
