I found a post on Quora from a British person who had an argument with a Spaniard. It reminds me of a discussion I had with an Italian man several years ago who insisted that the Scots are English and that all of the UK is England. What surprises me about these individuals is how they think they know more than the locals, yet demonstrate ignorance of basic history and politics.
You can find the post here.
For those who don’t want to read it here is a quick summary.
A Spaniard asked in a pub: “Why do you insist on calling yourself British when it’s pedantic?” You are all English!
Oh, not all Britons are English. Welsh, Scots and Northern Irish can claim to be British, but they are NOT English.
The Spanish guy then proceeded to explain that ALL Britons are English; labeling them Irish, Scottish or Welsh is just nitpicking. Everyone knows they are all English, that the Irish, Welsh and Scots are English so it’s a waste of time and there are no different nations in the UK. Did you hear that Nicola Sturgeon?
The person who wrote the post had to give up because she could not convince this ‘expert’ that had spent 2 months in England and understood everything. Finally she claimed she wanted to hear him say the same thing in a Glasgow pub!
