Il primo libro della serie fu scritto da Gertrude Chandler Warner che ne scrisse altri 18, ma gli altri furono scritti da persone diverse. Il libri raccontavano la storia e le avventure di quattro orfanelli Henry, Jessie, Violet e Benny, ovvero The Boxcar Children. Ci sono diverse teorie ma non sappiamo che era successo ai genitori dei quattro e come mai erano rimasti orfani, i libri non lo rivelano mai. Le loro storie e i misteri che devono svelare fanno parte della cultura americana, praticamente tutti gli americani da 90 anni a questa parte sono cresciuti con questi libri.
